Sensory Room

The sensory room at Hazelwood Care Home has been specially created to offer a calming space that supports residents living with dementia, cerebral palsy, or sensory impairments such as visual or hearing difficulties. Featuring gentle lighting effects, a variety of soothing textures, and comfortable seating, the room is designed to engage the senses in a safe and peaceful setting. This dedicated space helps to enhance communication, reduce anxiety, and improve overall well-being for those who benefit from sensory stimulation.

The Benefits of a Sensory Room

Our Sensory Room was created to benefit a majority of residents with differing illnesses or conditions. Those with sensory impairments, cerebral palsy or dementia will greatly benefit from using this room. The soft objects, multicoloured lighting and sounds played can help to develop communication skills, improve focus and provide a calming effect on individuals. It can also help those who are unable to socialise in a normal environment to produce emotions or connections with others that they wouldn’t usually do.

We value the voices of our residents and always welcome their suggestions, continuously shaping our activity programme – including use of our sensory room – around their preferences and well-being.

Sensory Room FAQs

Activities such as finger painting, gentle hand massages, animal therapy, listening to music, or even simple tasks like folding towels can be especially beneficial for residents living with dementia. These engaging experiences are designed to support emotional well-being and stimulate the mind in a comforting, familiar way.

A sensory room is a carefully designed space that brings together a range of sensory features to support older adults with dementia, learning or developmental disabilities, or sensory impairments. This adaptable environment can be used for therapeutic purposes, gentle physical activity, or simply as a calming space for relaxation and sensory engagement.

Every sensory room in a care home is unique, designed to cater to the diverse needs of its residents. The main goal of a sensory room is to provide a safe, calming space that enhances the quality of life for those with specific health conditions. Typically, these rooms feature a variety of seating choices, soothing coloured lights, projectors, soft furnishings, and a range of tactile objects to engage the senses.
