Celebrating International Women’s Day at Hazelwood Care Home

On 8th March 2025, Hazelwood Care Home joined people around the world in celebrating International Women’s Day, a day dedicated to recognising the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. Our home was filled with conversation, laughter, and a sense of appreciation as residents and staff came together to honour the occasion.
International Women’s Day has been marked globally since 1911, and its importance has grown significantly over the last decade. At Hazelwood Care Home, we ensure that residents are involved in national and community events, fostering a strong sense of connection and inclusivity. This particular celebration was especially meaningful to our Home Manager, as her daughter was born on this day. Alongside the home’s celebrations, she also marked the occasion with her family.

Residents engaged in discussions about the history of women’s rights, including the suffragette movement and the pivotal moment in 1908 when women fought for the right to vote. These conversations sparked memories among many residents, bringing smiles as they recalled past events and shared their own experiences. It was also a learning experience for Richard, one of our male residents, who embraced the opportunity to understand the significance of International Women’s Day and celebrate alongside his fellow residents.
Residents also had the opportunity this month to take part in a unique virtual reality (VR) experience. With the help of VR Time, residents embarked on a virtual journey across the globe, exploring destinations such as Toronto, Sardinia, Paris, Mexico, and New York. For some, these places brought back cherished memories of past travels and family holidays, while for others, it was an opportunity to visit places they had always dreamed of seeing. The immersive experience was met with enthusiasm and joy, and even some staff joined in on the adventure. Due to the overwhelmingly positive response, we are planning to organise more VR sessions in the future which will give residents further opportunities to explore the world from the comfort of their home away from home.

At Hazelwood Care Home, we are committed to making sure our residents feel engaged, connected, and valued through their daily activities. Celebrating International Women’s Day was a wonderful reminder of the progress made throughout history and the importance of recognising and appreciating the contributions of women in our society. It was a day filled with learning, reflection, and shared moments of joy, and we look forward to continuing these meaningful celebrations in the years to come.
