Regaining Independence at Hazelwood Care Home in Longfield – Barry’s Story

Respite stay at a care home

When Barry arrived at Hazelwood Care Home in August 2025 following a hospital stay, he required a high level of support. He was bedbound, living with cognitive impairment and a cancer diagnosis, and needed assistance with his day-to-day personal care.

At the time, Barry had very little mobility and relied on staff for most aspects of his care. His confidence was low, and he was unable to take part in activities or enjoy the social side of life within the home.

Supporting Recovery at Every Step

With the support of the dedicated team at Hazelwood Care Home, Barry’s journey began to change. Through personalised care, encouragement and daily support, he gradually started to regain his strength and confidence.

What once required full assistance slowly became more manageable, and Barry began to take small but important steps towards independence. The team worked closely with him to rebuild both his physical ability and his confidence, ensuring he felt supported every step of the way.

A New Lease of Life at Hazelwood

Today, Barry’s transformation has been remarkable. He is now able to walk independently and take part in daily life around the home with confidence.

Barry enjoys being around others and has become a familiar and friendly face within the home. He often walks around greeting other residents, taking the time to say good morning and engage in conversation. His warm and sociable nature has made a positive impact on those around him.

He now joins in with a wide range of activities and particularly enjoys reading the headlines and discussing current affairs with fellow residents. Barry also enjoys spending time walking around the home and gardens, something he has grown to love again.

His daughter has shared how wonderful it is to see him return to his old self, regaining both his independence and his personality. Barry now takes pride in helping others, getting involved in games and supporting fellow residents where he can.

“Barry is a lovely man who is generous and thoughtful. He always thanks everyone for their help and how far he has come in regaining his independence.” – Kylie, Activities Team

“Barry has improved so well. He was assisted by two carers and used a wheelchair, and his confidence was low. Seeing him become independent again has been lovely. He is now able to live independently with a little support from us.” – Lisa, Care Staff
